HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG SOME BASIC TRAINING COMMAND

Dogs are beautiful creatures popularly known as a man’s best friend.
Ofcourse we all know that dogs are very obedient and submissive to their owners, but with alittle advanced training your dog can be fully trained to obey basic commands such as “Sit”  “Come”  “Down” “Stay”  “Leave it”.

So, in this very Article I’m going to teach some very simple guidelines on how to teach your dog these basic commands.

HERE WE GO:

First of all, to make the teaching process more faster and easier you have to have some “Treats” in your possession, Treats can be anything edible by dogs, (and non toxic to their system) it could be a piece of cooked meat, cookies, or snacks.

 

COME

This command is very essential and vital, It can help your dog stay out of trouble, or from attacking strangers,once your dog has fully mastered this command, you can easily bring your dog back to you, if you happen to lose grip on the leash.

HOW DO I TEACH MY DOG THIS COMMAND?

Step 1
Put a leash and collar on your dog

Step 2
Now go down to his level, and say “Come” while you gently pull on the leash.

Step3
When he gets to you, reward him with the treat and show affection.

Keep repeating this training process, once your dog has mastered it with the leash, then remove the leash and keep practicing the command.

Note: Practice the command in a safe enclosed area, when the dog is not on a leash.

SIT

Well according  to research this is the easiest dog obedience command to teach.

When a dog has fully mastered this command, it will help make the dog more submissive and obedient to it’s owner.

HOW DO I TEACH MY DOG THIS COMMAND?

Step 1
Hold a treat close to your dogs nose

Step 2
Move your hand up, your dog will try to follow the treat, this will make him/her lower his/her bottom.

Step 3
Once  your dog is in a sitting position, Say “Sit” then give him/her the treat and show affection by rubbing his/her head and ears.

Repeat this process Daily until your dog masters it.
Then ask your dog to sit before mealtime, also ask him/her to sit anytime or situation you’d like him/her calm and seated.

 

DOWN
This is the most difficult command in dog’s obedience training.

Why is that? This is because the position is a submissive posture.

To help matters, during the training process keep it positive and relaxed especially with fearful and anxious dogs.

HOW DO I TEACH MY DOG THIS COMMAND?

Step 1
Find a good mouth watering, smelling Treat, probably your dog’s favourite, hold it tightly in your closed hand.

Step 2
Hold your hand up to your dog’s nose, when he/she sniffs it, move your hand to the floor, so he/she follows.

Step 3
Then slide your hand along the ground in front of him/her, this is to encourage his/her body to follow his/her head.

Step 4
Once your dog is in the down position, say “Down” give him/her the treat and show affection.

Repeat this training process everyday.
If your dog tries to sit up towards your hand, say “No” and take your hand away.

Encourage every step your dog takes, because he’s/she’s working hard to figure it out.

 

LEAVE IT.

This command will help your dog stay safe, especially when your dog tries to eat something which isn’t meant for him/her or even worse may be dangerous his/her system.

The goal for this training command is to teach your dog to ignore things when you want them to.

HOW DO I TEACH MY DOG THIS COMMAND?

Step 1
Place a treat in both hands

Step 2
Show your dog one of your enclosed hand with the treat inside and say “Leave it”.

Step 3
Let him/her lick, sniff, mouth, paw and bark to try to get it.

Step 4
Once he/she stops trying, give him/her the treat from the other hand.

Keep repeating this training process until your dog moves away from the first hand when you say “Leave it”.

Note: Only give your dog the treat when he/she moves away from the first hand .

Don’t rush this training process, take it easy with your dog, and excercise some Patience, it takes a while, if your dog fails the test, keep repeating the training process until he/she Masters it.

 

STAY

It’s advised before proceeding with this training command, ensure your dog has already mastered the “Sit” command.

HOW DO I TEACH MY DOG THIS COMMAND?

Step 1
First, ask your dog to “Sit”.

Step 2
Then open the palm of your hand in front of you and say “Stay”.

Step 3
Take a few steps back, reward him/her with a treat and affection if he/she stays.

Gradually increase the number of steps you take backwards before giving the treat.

Note: Always reward your dog for staying still or put, even if it’s for a few seconds, it matters alot, and it encourages your dog to learn faster.

This training Excercise is for self-control for your dog, so don’t be discouraged, it takes a while to master especially for puppies and high-energy dogs, after all dogs always want to be on the move, and not just sitting there waiting.
